Imo Police Seize More Than 25 Vehicles Featuring Hidden License Plates

Imo State Police have impounded over 25 vehicles for violating traffic laws regarding obscured or missing license plates as part of a new security initiative.

The Imo State Police Command recently confiscated over 25 vehicles that were operating with missing, concealed, or obstructed registration plates. Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso announced the operation in Owerri, noting that it aligns with legal mandates that forbid vehicles from hitting the road without clearly visible license plates.

Commissioner Bosso emphasized that this crackdown is a strategic effort to bolster public safety and sharpen intelligence gathering. By eliminating the anonymity provided by hidden plates, authorities aim to prevent criminals from using such vehicles to carry out acts like kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence. The operation is supported by the National Road Traffic Regulations of 2012 and the Police Act of 2020.

Police leadership has instructed officers across all divisions and tactical units to enforce these regulations firmly but professionally. The Command is currently profiling the owners of the impounded vehicles and has confirmed that those in violation will face prosecution regardless of their social status. Bosso clarified that the initiative is not meant to harass the public or facilitate extortion, but rather to ensure better vehicle traceability and security across the state. Motorists have been urged to fix damaged or missing plates immediately to comply with traffic laws.
