The Allied People’s Movement (APM) in Lagos State has demanded that the Federal Government justify its financial activities following International Monetary Fund (IMF) findings regarding potential off-budget expenditures. Public Secretary Ayodele Kazeem released a statement on Sunday emphasizing that citizens are entitled to transparency concerning the usage of state resources.
This demand follows an IMF Article IV consultation report, which estimated that approximately ₦8.8 trillion—or two percent of Nigeria’s GDP—was spent without formal legislative inclusion. The APM asserts that all government spending must adhere to constitutional mandates, undergo independent auditing, and receive proper legislative authorization.
The party warned that such opaque financial practices erode public trust and invite fiscal mismanagement during a period of economic strain. Furthermore, the APM is seeking answers regarding recent deductions from state government statutory allocations, requesting a formal explanation of the legal justifications and the destination of these funds.
The APM has proposed that the National Assembly initiate a formal probe into these IMF claims. Additionally, the party requested that the Auditor-General perform a public audit of the missing budget entries. Finally, they insisted that the government disclose specific project details, including contractor identities and funding sources, while calling for the refund of any illegal state allocation deductions.
