Shortages and inflated costs drive preference for stockfish heads in Lagos markets

Rising market prices and supply constraints have led Lagos shoppers to prioritize stockfish heads over traditional cuts, citing both cost-efficiency and superior flavor in local soups.

Consumers across Lagos are increasingly favoring stockfish heads as limited supply and rising costs impact the availability of the popular soup ingredient. Traders and buyers alike report that supply chain disruptions and surging demand have significantly driven up market prices for the product, which is traditionally imported from Iceland and Norway.

Wholesale dealer Mr. Udoka Umeaku explained that a 30kg sack of stockfish heads now retails for approximately N500,000, a sharp rise from N385,000 late last year. Umeaku noted that current maritime disruptions have hindered shipments, while others, such as association patron Mr. Orji Onuoha, pointed to the combined impact of currency fluctuations and the involvement of numerous middlemen in the distribution process.

Despite the high costs, the ingredient remains a staple in many households, particularly among Igbo families. Many consumers have shifted their preference to stockfish heads, citing both affordability and the rich, distinct flavor they add to traditional dishes like oha and bitter leaf soup. Retailers report that heads are now in higher demand than fleshy parts, as customers prioritize flavor even as their purchasing power diminishes.

While some vendors have opted to buy smaller or bony parts to maintain their profit margins, others continue to purchase the heads due to the perceived nutritional value and unique aroma. Buyers remain hopeful that prices will stabilize once supply chains normalize and the market becomes adequately stocked again.
