Republican Congressman Riley Moore of West Virginia recently stated that the Donald Trump administration intends to keep a watchful eye on the management of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. During an interview with NoireTV, Moore emphasized that Washington is prioritizing the integrity of the upcoming electoral process.
Moore highlighted that the US House of Representatives is currently advancing an appropriations bill with significant implications for Nigeria. This legislation includes language focused on religious freedom and conditions for future security assistance. According to Moore, the bill features strict provisions regarding the treatment of Christian populations and mandates specific actions from the Nigerian government. He noted that these measures are intended to become binding components of the bilateral relationship.
The congressman also confirmed he maintains direct lines of communication with President Trump regarding these concerns. Furthermore, Moore is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, alongside Representative Chris Smith. If enacted, this legislation would compel the US State Department to provide Congress with consistent updates on religious persecution, mass atrocities, and the effectiveness of US security aid and sanctions in the region.
