Augustine Eguavoen Debunks Claims of Stepping Down as Super Eagles Interim Coach
Austin Eguavoen has refuted claims that he has stepped down as the interim coach of the Super Eagles following the team’s two 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Eguavoen was appointed by the NFF to oversee these matches after the federation failed to secure German coach Bruno Labbadia.
The 59-year-old guided Nigeria to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, last Saturday, and followed it up with a goalless draw against Rwanda on Tuesday.
Despite reports suggesting that Eguavoen had resigned after the draw in Kigali, he has denied these claims and is set to continue leading the team in next month’s AFCON qualifiers against Libya.
“It’s unfortunate that people are spreading incorrect information. In our current situation, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen stated during a media chat upon arriving at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
“I only mentioned that I would discuss the next steps with the federation’s leadership after these two games. We’ll decide how to proceed from there.
“When I saw that story, I was concerned. The information circulating isn’t accurate. I’m still fully in charge. As the Technical Director of the NFF, I am responsible for overseeing the Super Eagles at this time,” he added.
