Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa State, recently voiced his displeasure with Isa Ali Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, regarding Pantami’s previous characterization of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as an “infidel party.” Lamido expressed these views during a meeting at his Bamaina residence on Saturday with several PDP governorship candidates from northern states.
Highlighting his enduring allegiance to the party, Lamido noted that the PDP faced significant hostility during its tenure, with critics and certain religious leaders questioning its integrity. He emphasized that he stayed with the organization because it facilitated his roles as both a foreign affairs minister and a two-term state governor. Lamido also recounted how prominent APC leaders—including Bola Tinubu, Muhammadu Buhari, and Babatunde Fashola—attempted to recruit him after the 2015 elections. He stated that he refused their offers and instead invited them to defect to the PDP.
Addressing the conduct of Pantami, Lamido recalled the former minister’s past sermons as a university cleric, where he allegedly prayed against the PDP and disparaged its moral standing. Lamido pointed out the irony of Pantami later seeking to join the PDP after being unsuccessful in his bid for the APC gubernatorial nomination in Gombe. As of now, Pantami has offered no public rebuttal to these claims, which emerge during a period of shifting political alliances leading up to the 2027 elections.
