During a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV appealed to European leaders to tackle the significant challenges posed by migration. Addressing a crowd at an island mass, the pontiff emphasized the need for better integration for new arrivals and suggested that Europe should work to improve living standards in the migrants’ home countries. He noted that those who perished in the Mediterranean were victims of both actions taken and inaction.
Since assuming the papacy in May 2025, the American-born Pope has consistently advocated for increased migrant assistance and frequently challenged the anti-immigration policies of the US government. The visit began at a cemetery, where the Pope prayed for individuals who lost their lives on the dangerous journey from Africa. He also stood before the Gate of Europe memorial to honor the deceased.
Reflecting on the island’s role as a gateway, the Pope stated that European nations have the capacity to manage the crisis through a combination of immediate aid and long-term planning. He argued that this strategy should focus on receiving and supporting migrants while assisting developing nations to reduce the need for emigration. The UN’s International Organization for Migration reports that over 1,400 people have died or disappeared during Mediterranean crossings this year alone.
Kandeh Abdourahman, a cultural mediator who reached the island in 2015, remarked that the visit served as a powerful reminder that the struggles of migrants are recognized. Throughout his time in office, the Pope has remained a vocal critic of stances he views as inhuman, often clashing with political leaders over the treatment of those fleeing their homelands.
