The remains of Wendy Achumba, a nursing student at the School of Nursing Umuologho Obowo, were laid to rest on Friday at her family home in Umuokohia, Abia State. The victim was allegedly raped and killed on May 21, 2026, at her residence following her rejection of a local man’s advances.
During the interment, the victim’s father, Jerry Achumba, urged Governor Alex Otti, law enforcement, and the courts to impose the death penalty on those responsible for the crime. He insisted that his family will actively seek full legal retribution to ensure the culprits face execution for their actions.
Representing Governor Otti, Special Assistant Chinedu Nwosu emphasized that the state government remains dedicated to securing justice for the deceased. He noted that the administration would not ignore such a violent act and promised ongoing support for the Achumba family throughout the legal proceedings.
Fellow students from the School of Nursing attended the ceremony in large numbers, visibly distraught as they said their final goodbyes to their classmate.
