A Texas woman has been formally indicted in connection with the racially motivated attempted drowning of a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl.

Elizabeth Wolf, 42, was arrested in May after attempting to drown the young girl at a swimming pool in an apartment complex in Euless, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb. Wolf reportedly targeted the girl because she was Muslim, and the girl’s six-year-old brother was also injured during the incident.

On August 15, a Tarrant County grand jury indicted Wolf on charges of attempted capital murder of a person under 10 years of age and intentionally causing bodily injury to a child. The indictment also includes a hate crime enhancement, which could increase the severity of her sentence if convicted.

Investigators allege that Wolf, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, approached a Muslim woman, identified as Mrs. H, and began making racist remarks. Wolf questioned Mrs. H about her family’s origins and the two children in the pool. Shortly thereafter, Wolf attempted to drown the three-year-old girl and also tried to grab the six-year-old boy, causing him a minor injury.

According to the police report, Wolf grabbed the three-year-old girl and forced her underwater. Mrs. H managed to rescue her daughter, who was coughing and yelling for help. The children were subsequently examined by medics and cleared of any serious injuries.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported that a Black man intervened and helped rescue the young girl as bystanders gathered. CAIR confirmed that while the children are safe, they are deeply traumatized by the incident.

Wolf reportedly shouted threats at a witness while being handcuffed, saying she would kill Mrs. H and her entire family. Additionally, Mrs. H recounted that Wolf had removed her hijab and physically assaulted her, preventing her from reaching her daughter during the attack.

In a statement, Mrs. H expressed her distress: “We are American citizens originally from Palestine, and I don’t know where to go to feel safe with my kids. My country is facing a war, and we are facing that hate here. My daughter is traumatized; she runs away and hides whenever I open the apartment door, fearing the attacker will come back. My husband’s job is also at risk because he has to leave work frequently to support our family.”

The case continues to draw significant attention and concern from the community.
