Obio/Akpor Council Prohibits Commercial Motorcycling Effective August 1

Starting August 1, the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area will enforce a ban on commercial motorcycle taxis to improve security and road safety, with specific exemptions for logistics and emergency services.

The local government council of Obio/Akpor has declared a prohibition on commercial motorcycle operations, commonly referred to as Okada, scheduled to start on August 1. Dr. Gift Worlu, the council chairman, announced the decision on Thursday in Port Harcourt. This measure aims to bolster security, ensure public order, minimize traffic incidents, and refine local transportation standards.

Dr. Worlu explained that the council acted to address ongoing issues involving public safety, traffic congestion, and illegal activities linked to these operators. He emphasized that the policy serves the public interest to better protect residents and their property. While commercial passenger transport is banned, the directive explicitly permits private motorcycle use, provided riders follow established traffic regulations.

Certain groups remain exempt from the ruling, including authorized dispatch and logistics personnel, emergency service providers, and security organizations. Authorities will work alongside security agencies to enforce the mandate. Dr. Worlu advised commercial riders to utilize the remaining days before the deadline to transition to other ventures. The council plans to conduct public awareness initiatives to inform stakeholders, urging community support to foster a safer and more orderly environment in Obio/Akpor.
