Afenifere Warns National Assembly Against Federal Control of State Police

Afenifere is urging the National Assembly to amend the State Police Bill, warning that current provisions could leave state law enforcement under federal control rather than granting them necessary autonomy.

The Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the State Police Bill. However, the group cautioned federal lawmakers to revise specific sections of the legislation that might allow the federal government to maintain excessive control over these new state units.

In an official statement released by National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi, following a meeting at leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s home, Afenifere advocated for moving policing to the Concurrent Legislative List. This move, the group argues, is essential to guarantee true autonomy for states.

Afenifere also raised alarm regarding the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area, noting that the victims have been missing for nearly 50 days. They urged regional governors to adopt more effective strategies to combat insecurity and protect local transit routes.

Addressing the broader security landscape, the group called for an end to election-related violence and thuggery. They further recommended that the federal government support security personnel with better equipment and welfare while investigating potential internal collaborators and the illegal mining interests often linked to rural displacement.

Finally, Afenifere reaffirmed its commitment to national restructuring as a primary solution for development. While acknowledging the current administration’s progress, the group encouraged President Tinubu to accelerate these efforts.
