The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has signaled that strikes could soon hit three Lagos State-run institutions. The union is frustrated by the state government’s refusal to adopt the 2025 agreement established between the federal government and ASUU. The universities at risk are the Lagos State University (LASU), the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
During a media briefing held on Thursday at LASUSTECH, union leadership highlighted that the government has ignored lecturer welfare concerns for months. Adesola Nassir, the ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, questioned how the state can promote academic excellence while failing to provide acceptable working conditions. He noted that other states have already begun applying the 2025 agreement, making Lagos’s delay particularly frustrating for staff.
The union warned that continued inaction will erode staff morale and potentially degrade educational standards, leading to instability across campuses. Furthermore, ASUU representatives cited unresolved issues regarding the firing of union members and alleged harassment of leadership staff at LASUED. They have placed the responsibility for any future closures directly on the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, urging him to resolve these disputes immediately to prevent an academic shutdown.
