Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently stated that Nigeria might not withstand the consequences of another civil war. He argued that several underlying factors that fueled the initial conflict have yet to be addressed.
Speaking at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the former leader addressed these concerns while accepting a historical report regarding the Asaba Massacre from Chief Chuck Nduka-Eze. The publication chronicles the civilian casualties that occurred in Asaba throughout the Nigerian Civil War.
Reflecting on his wartime experiences, Obasanjo noted his inability to provide specific details regarding the Asaba incident. He clarified that the late Murtala Muhammed held command over military operations in that region. Obasanjo emphasized that he remains consistent in this response whenever questioned about the events under Muhammed’s leadership, maintaining that he lacks the necessary firsthand information to comment on those specific military actions.
