Atiku Abubakar Names Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson

Atiku Abubakar has officially appointed Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, signaling a move toward reconciliation following internal party disputes regarding regional representation.

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has selected actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo to serve as his spokesperson. Okonkwo confirmed the development via his X account on Thursday, thanking the former Vice President for the opportunity.

Okonkwo praised Abubakar’s leadership approach, highlighting his preference for constructive discussion and consensus-building rather than personal grievances. According to Okonkwo, their recent meetings with party leadership focused on ensuring that the political aspirations of the South-East region are protected under the 2026 Electoral Act.

The actor also acknowledged several key figures, including Dr. Kashim Imam and former party chairman Ralphs Nwosu, for their efforts in preparing the ADC for the upcoming elections. He requested continued support as he transitions into this high-stakes role.

This appointment follows a period of friction within the party. Okonkwo had previously voiced strong public opposition to the ADC’s potential vice-presidential picks, arguing that overlooking the South-East would exacerbate political marginalization. Despite his objections, the party moved forward with its selection of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as Abubakar’s running mate.
