Rain Forces Abandonment of England-India T20 Opener

Persistent rain led to the abandonment of the first T20 international between England and India at Chester-le-Street, leaving the series level at 0-0.

The inaugural T20 international between England and India at Chester-le-Street was cut short by inclement weather. Following a difficult start to the summer, including Ben Stokes’ retirement after a loss to New Zealand, England’s hopes for a fresh start were dampened by persistent rain. The series, consisting of five matches, now stands at 0-0.

India managed to reach 189-7 during their innings, which took place while rain continued to fall. After early setbacks left them at 6-2, Shreyas Iyer anchored the side with 68 off 47 balls, while Abhishek Sharma contributed a rapid 59 from 24 deliveries. Shivam Dube finished unbeaten on 42. Saqib Mahmood led the English bowling attack, taking 3-33.

Phil Salt provided an injury scare for England when he left the field due to a shoulder issue. Although the pitch was prepared for a potential five-over chase, authorities officially called off the match at 20:15 BST as conditions failed to improve. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday at Old Trafford.

England captain Harry Brook, who took over white-ball duties in April 2025, viewed this encounter as a critical test against a formidable opponent. Amidst the series, Brook has expressed his willingness to take on the Test captaincy, suggesting that managing all three formats is a viable prospect.
