The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the international group Interferry have finished the second installment of their Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP). This initiative is designed to elevate operational standards and safety across the region.
Fifty attendees underwent seamanship instruction at the Sea School in Apapa. The curriculum covered essential skills such as knot tying, mooring, anchoring, and proper deck maintenance through a mix of digital mentoring and field exercises.
Participants also engaged in a virtual session with Jeff Joyce, a vice president at Northumberland Ferries Limited, who provided guidance on maritime leadership and global safety standards. Practical training was overseen by Engr. Ukeme Sunday and Dr. Ekundayo, with support from a team of maritime experts. The drills focused on rope management and technical safety procedures.
Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser on the Blue Economy, noted that these field sessions allow operators to experience real-world conditions. He expressed appreciation to LAGFERRY and Thesaurus Bay Limited for supplying the necessary equipment for the training.
The FSDP represents an 18-month commitment to training the next generation of ferry professionals in Africa. Following this success, the program will transition into its third module this July, which will center on emergency preparedness and risk management.
