Akpabio cautions AMAC Chairman over unauthorized road naming in Abuja

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has instructed the AMAC Chairman to stop naming federal-funded road projects after personal contacts and relatives without proper authorization.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a stern warning to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, regarding the naming of roads within the Federal Capital Territory. Akpabio emphasized that local officials must not designate names for infrastructure projects financed by the federal government.

Speaking at the inauguration of roads in the Gaduwa District, Akpabio explicitly told the Chairman not to name government-funded projects after personal acquaintances or relatives, such as his mother or a local palm wine tapper. He noted that the federal government holds the authority to name its projects, stating that those who provide the funding dictate the nomenclature.

This directive aligns with prior warnings from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who previously restricted the AMAC Chairman from naming roads completed by the FCT Administration. Wike clarified that local councils only possess the authority to name streets developed specifically with their own budget, rather than those built through federal administration resources.
