Multiple districts in Lagos are facing an electricity blackout due to recent heavy rainfall. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), through Public Affairs General Manager Ndidi Mbah, announced a force majeure impacting the Oworoshoki and Lekki transmission substations.
The Oworoshoki 133/33KV substation has ceased operations entirely after floodwaters compromised two power transformers. Specifically, the TR1 60 MVA and TR3 30 MVA units tripped and remain offline. TCN noted that control and protection cables are currently underwater, and ongoing rain has hampered drainage efforts.
While the Lekki 330/132KV substation remains functional due to continuous pumping operations, the situation in Oworoshoki remains critical. TCN engineers are actively working to remove the water so they can conduct safety tests and restore power. The company has apologized to customers of Eko Distribution Company who are affected by these disruptions.
