Tuchel to Maintain Southgate’s Penalty Strategy

Thomas Tuchel plans to uphold the penalty shootout protocols established by former manager Gareth Southgate as England prepares for their knockout match against DR Congo.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that his squad will continue using the penalty shootout framework established by his predecessor, Sir Gareth Southgate. As Tuchel prepares for his first major tournament knockout match against DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday, he emphasized that the Football Association has an existing, effective program in place.

Before Southgate took the helm in 2016, England historically struggled with spot-kicks, winning only one of seven major shootouts. Under Southgate, the team refined their approach, securing three victories out of four between 2018 and 2024. The strategy focuses on preparation and muscle memory, though Tuchel acknowledged that recreating the pressure of a live shootout in practice remains impossible.

The established routine involves clear protocols for takers and specific roles during the process, including the “buddy” system designed to support players walking back from the spot. Tuchel noted that while the team follows these established guidelines, the selection of who finishes the match determines the final takers. Additionally, he warned against expecting a spectacular display against DR Congo, insisting the current priority is simply advancing through the bracket.
