A deadly wildfire has erupted in northern Greece, leading to the death of one man and forcing the evacuation of local residents. The victim was discovered in a burned area close to Liti, a town situated roughly 15km north-west of Thessaloniki. More than 100 firefighters have been mobilized to battle the blaze.
Reports indicate that a woman sustained hand burns while attempting to douse the flames herself. Rescue operations involve dozens of fire trucks and seven aircraft, all struggling against intense wind and high temperatures. The fire, which spans an estimated 5km, began around 14:30 and rapidly engulfed a nearby forest. Its origin currently remains unknown.
Authorities had issued a high-risk warning for the region due to dry, windy conditions that have fueled repeated flare-ups. While Liti residents were ordered to evacuate, some structures have reportedly suffered damage as the fire moves toward the village of Melissochori. This incident is part of a series of fires in Greece as the nation faces its peak summer season, marked by recurring droughts and extreme heat.
