Harry Brook Open to Assuming England Test Captaincy Role

Harry Brook has confirmed he would welcome the opportunity to lead the England Test team, maintaining that it is possible to captain in all three formats of the sport.

Harry Brook has expressed his willingness to take on the role of England Test captain, asserting that managing the position across all three formats is a viable ambition. Following Ben Stokes’ retirement from Test leadership, Brook has received full support from his predecessor, despite competing candidates like Joe Root also being under consideration.

Brook, aged 27, currently serves as the white-ball captain and was previously designated as the Test vice-captain. While he acknowledges the logistical challenges of a packed international schedule, he believes the gaps in his calendar—due to his lack of franchise cricket commitments—would provide adequate time for preparation and fitness. He emphasized that his primary goal remains contributing to the team regardless of whether he holds the captaincy.

Addressing past disciplinary concerns, including a well-documented incident in Wellington, Brook reflected on being overlooked for the leadership during the second Test against New Zealand, calling the decision to appoint Joe Root correct. He remains focused on his performance, noting that his career Test average of 53.04 reflects his dedication to scoring runs and helping England secure victories.
