The Federal High Court in Abuja has reinstated the bail of Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, following his initial revocation. Sowore is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the Department of State Services (DSS) over cybercrime allegations linked to social media comments labeling President Bola Tinubu a criminal.
Justice Muhammed Umar previously rescinded Sowore’s bail and ordered his arrest after the activist missed a court appearance, leading to his remand in Kuje prison. Following a change in legal representation, Sowore’s new counsel successfully requested the restoration of bail. The court has now granted bail set at N200 million, requiring two sureties of an equal amount and the surrender of the defendant’s international passport.
The legal dispute stems from social media posts made by Sowore in August 2025, which challenged the president’s claims regarding the elimination of corruption in Nigeria. The DSS contends these posts were defamatory and intended to incite civil unrest. While X Inc. and Meta were initially named as co-defendants, they were removed from the revised charges. Sowore, who maintains his innocence, argued that the previous court sanctions were improper under the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
