Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has responded to the intense criticism following her suggestion that unemployed women should consider selling akara, a traditional fried bean cake, to sustain themselves. The recommendation, which circulated widely in an online video, drew sharp condemnation from young Nigerians who felt the statement was dismissive of their struggles.
Addressing the controversy during an event in Jigawa State on Monday, Tinubu maintained that her administration remains unfazed by the negative reception. She clarified that her office provides resources to various small-scale vendors, including those selling tomatoes, maize, and vegetables. Emphasizing the value of these initiatives, she stated that the actual beneficiaries of the support programs are grateful for the assistance. Tinubu confirmed that she will not be deterred by public outcry and intends to persist in her efforts to provide for the citizens.
