Carl Rinsch, the American director recognized for the movie 47 Ronin, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. New York prosecutors confirmed the conviction regarding his misappropriation of millions provided by Netflix.
In 2020, Netflix allocated $11 million to Rinsch for the production of a science fiction project titled White Horse. Rather than funding the series, authorities stated that Rinsch squandered the capital on volatile stock options, cryptocurrency trades, and high-end personal items. His unauthorized spending included a Ferrari, five Rolls-Royces, and various luxury furnishings and clothing.
Alongside the jail term, the 48-year-old director must forfeit the full $11 million. Defense attorneys requested a lighter sentence, citing significant professional stress and a difficult divorce as contributing factors. The planned series, later referred to as Conquest, was intended to follow a narrative involving human clones residing in a restricted Brazilian city.
Before the sentencing occurred, actor Keanu Reeves, who worked with Rinsch on 47 Ronin, sent a letter to the judge. Reeves requested mercy for the filmmaker, characterizing him as a highly talented individual who struggled with personal self-sabotage.
