Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that a government cannot grasp the complexities of the economy without continuous dialogue with private sector employers. Speaking at the 5th Nigerian Employers’ Summit in Abuja, he emphasized the administration’s dedication to digitizing public services and eliminating bureaucratic hurdles to foster a better business climate.
Represented by Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, the Vice President argued that Nigeria is at a critical juncture requiring transparent discussions on economic reform. He noted that the private sector relies on dependable infrastructure, stable policies, and energy reliability rather than rhetoric. Shettima lauded President Bola Tinubu for pursuing necessary, albeit challenging, reforms aimed at correcting structural economic distortions, such as the fuel subsidy and fragmented foreign exchange markets.
The administration’s focus remains on restoring macroeconomic stability to encourage investment. Key initiatives include harmonizing tax systems to prevent multiple taxation and streamlining administrative processes to ensure government reforms are felt nationwide. Shettima praised the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) for its long-standing role as a bridge between the government and the business community.
NECA Director-General, Adewale Oyerinde, highlighted the summit’s success in shaping national policy. Looking ahead, Oyerinde announced that the event is set to evolve into the International Employers’ Summit by 2027, broadening its scope beyond Nigerian borders.
