Jannik Sinner Overcomes Five-Set Challenge in Wimbledon Opener

Defending champion Jannik Sinner narrowly avoided a first-round Wimbledon exit by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic in a hard-fought five-set match on Centre Court.

Jannik Sinner successfully launched his Wimbledon title defense by rallying from a set behind to beat Miomir Kecmanovic in a grueling five-set encounter. The match lasted three and a half hours, with the four-time major champion eventually prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3.

Entering the tournament without any grass-court preparation, the Italian faced significant pressure following his recent early exit at the French Open. His resilience was put to the test against the 50th-ranked Serbian, particularly after an awkward fall behind the baseline during the third set that left spectators anxious. Sinner also dealt with a minor injury, as blood was visible on his shoe due to a problematic toenail during the fourth set.

By securing the win, Sinner avoided becoming only the third men’s defending champion to bow out in the first round at the All England Club. This victory represents a crucial turnaround for the athlete, who has historically struggled in long-form matches, having previously won only six of his last 18 five-set battles.
