Juan Mata, the decorated former Spanish international and Manchester United star, has officially acquired a minority stake in A-League side Melbourne Victory. Beyond his current playing duties, the World Cup winner is slated to transition into a significant administrative position within the organization once he concludes his professional playing career.
The announcement confirms that Mata’s commitment to the Australian club is part of a multi-year strategy. Since joining from the Western Sydney Wanderers in September of the previous year, the 38-year-old has made a profound impact. During the 2025-26 season, he played 25 matches, recorded five goals, and contributed 13 assists. His contributions were pivotal in securing fourth place for the club and led to him receiving the prestigious Johnny Warren Medal for the league’s top performer.
While Mata is currently deciding if he will extend his active playing career into the next season, the club has finalized plans for him to lead a newly established football committee post-retirement. Mata expressed strong optimism regarding the future of the sport in Australia, citing the club’s passion as a primary motivator for his investment. This move aligns with his expanding business interests, which already include stakes in San Diego FC of Major League Soccer and the Alpine Racing Formula One team.
