Severe Rain Causes Massive Traffic Paralysis Across Lagos

Heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across Lagos, trapping commuters and motorists on major expressways while sparking concerns over drainage maintenance and waste management.

Significant rainfall caused major disruptions throughout Lagos yesterday, leaving travelers and motorists stranded as flash floods overtook key transport arteries. The downpour, which lasted from midday until 4 p.m., rendered several highways impassable and triggered extensive gridlock.

Reports confirmed that major transit routes, including the Lagos-Ibadan, Ikorodu, Lagos-Abeokuta, and Apapa-Oshodi Expressways, suffered from severe flooding. In areas like Ikeja, Agege, and Lekki, traffic flow ceased entirely. Many drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles, while commuters faced long treks on foot as public transport services halted.

This weather event followed a warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency regarding potential flash floods across the country. Local residents attributed the severity of the flooding to neglected drainage systems and the illegal dumping of waste, which obstructed water flow.

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged the public to remain composed. He described the flooding as a temporary flash event typical of coastal regions, noting that high lagoon tides often impede the drainage of rainwater. He assured the public that the government is committed to continuous drainage maintenance and waste management improvements. Commissioner Wahab further emphasized that citizens must avoid obstructing drainage paths with construction materials or refuse to help mitigate future occurrences.
