Nigeria records 188 million mobile subscriptions as broadband coverage grows

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector saw mobile subscriptions climb to 188 million in April 2026, with broadband penetration reaching 55.67 percent as consumers shift to higher-speed networks.

The telecommunications sector in Nigeria kept up its growth during April 2026. Active mobile lines grew to 188.01 million, while broadband coverage reached 55.67 percent.

New data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirms that total telephony subscriptions reached 188,009,171. This growth pushed the national teledensity rate to 86.73 percent, rising from the 85.67 percent seen in March.

MTN Nigeria continues to lead the market with 96,391,419 users, followed by Airtel Nigeria with 64,670,018. Globacom reported 23,178,597 subscribers, and 9mobile concluded the list with 3,538,021 active users.

Users are increasingly shifting toward faster connectivity. 4G networks remain the most popular choice, holding 54.41 percent of connections, while 5G usage climbed to 4.34 percent. Conversely, 2G usage fell to 35.93 percent, showing a move toward high-speed internet.

Total internet subscriptions reached 154,724,088. Although broadband numbers grew to 120,684,625, total data usage saw a slight dip to 1,414,848.70 terabytes compared to March. Despite this, the sector remains a primary economic driver, contributing 9.19 percent to the nation’s GDP in the first quarter of 2026.
