NDLEA intercepts N12.4bn cannabis shipment and dismantles drug trafficking rings

NDLEA officers intercepted nearly 5,000 kilograms of cannabis worth N12.4 billion at Lagos Port and dismantled several drug syndicates, including one targeting unsuspecting passengers at motor parks.

Agents from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) successfully seized 4,959 kilograms of Canadian Loud at the Apapa Port in Lagos. Valued at roughly N12.397 billion, the potent cannabis strain arrived in a container that had been tracked by authorities for over a month. The illicit cargo originated in Toronto before transiting through Morocco and finally reaching Nigeria.

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, officials detained 38-year-old entrepreneur Iwebema Ogechi Peace. She was caught attempting to smuggle 7.5 kilograms of cocaine to China by hiding the narcotics within a modified suitcase compartment.

Authorities also disrupted a criminal network that secretively plants drugs in the luggage of travelers at motor parks. This discovery occurred after a transit investigation involving an intercepted Sienna bus led to multiple arrests, including bus operators and a passenger named Onyebuchi Victor Okoye.

Additional enforcement efforts across Lagos and surrounding regions yielded significant drug seizures. These operations included the confiscation of 209.5 kilograms of Scottish Loud, over 558,000 Tramadol pills found in a specialized truck compartment, and 118 kilograms of skunk discovered along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Two women were also apprehended in Amukoko for their alleged roles in drug distribution.

NDLEA leader Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd) praised the various commands for their diligence. He emphasized that the agency remains focused on both aggressive supply reduction strategies and public awareness initiatives regarding the dangers of narcotics.
