NiDCOM: Nigerian Worker Discharged Following Qatar Gas Plant Explosion

NiDCOM confirms that Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, a Nigerian worker caught in a major gas facility explosion in Qatar, has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering well.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has reported that Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, a Nigerian national hurt in a recent blast at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, has left the hospital and is now recuperating. The incident, which occurred on June 21, 2026, at the Qatar Energy-operated site, resulted in injuries to 66 workers, though none sustained life-threatening harm.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, a spokesperson for NiDCOM, confirmed that Abdulrahman is currently recovering in employer-provided housing. The commission praised the swift actions of Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who monitored the situation closely after the blast, which officials determined was an industrial accident rather than an act of sabotage.

The explosion took place following the facility’s return to service after a long-term maintenance period. Workers from several countries, including Qatar, India, and Kenya, were among those impacted. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of NiDCOM, expressed relief regarding Abdulrahman’s recovery and urged Qatar Energy to continue supporting all affected personnel throughout their rehabilitation.
