NANS criticizes Anambra hostel demolition and seeks urgent support for students

NANS has demanded that the Anambra State government and hostel management compensate students displaced by the recent demolition of Legacy Hostel in Awka.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has voiced strong opposition to the recent destruction of the Legacy Hostel in Ifite, Awka, which left numerous students without housing. NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, highlighted the severe predicament facing those who lost their lodging.

Although the 54-room structure was reportedly demolished due to safety concerns regarding structural cracks, the students involved have been left without support for over a week despite having paid for a full year of rent. The organization labeled the lack of intervention from both the hostel administration and the state government as cruel.

The displacement has placed these students in vulnerable positions, exposing them to security threats like robbery and kidnapping. Furthermore, some individuals required hospitalization following the event, yet received no medical aid. NANS is now urging Governor Charles Soludo to mandate a full refund of rent payments and provide immediate humanitarian assistance.

The association further requested that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) offer emergency shelter and medical supplies. They have also demanded a thorough investigation into the demolition process to ensure accountability for the ongoing hardship faced by the student body.
