The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced strong opposition to a Federal High Court in Lokoja decision that reversed its previous recognition of the NDC. The party views this development as a calculated strike against Nigeria’s democratic framework as the general election approaches.
National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi issued a statement characterizing the ruling as deeply concerning. He cautioned that if the NDC can be subjected to protracted legal turmoil, any party presenting a political alternative could suffer an identical fate. The ADC emphasized that the judiciary must function as an impartial guardian of democracy rather than a tool for settling executive political scores.
The party further alleged that the administration of Bola Tinubu has failed to ensure an equitable environment for political competition. According to the ADC, frequent, suspicious legal battles directed at opposition groups are designed to weaken rivals and concentrate power. This trend threatens to deprive citizens of genuine electoral choices.
With only seven months remaining before the polls, the ADC urged civil society, labor unions, and the media to unite in protecting the country’s constitutional order. The party reaffirmed its commitment to resisting any shift toward a one-party system, insisting that freedom of association and the right to select leaders are fundamental rights that must be upheld.
