A fatal aviation incident occurred on Friday when a light aircraft struck the CITIC Tower, the tallest structure in Beijing. Chinese officials confirmed the pilot, the sole occupant of the two-seat single-engine plane, died in the crash. The impact also resulted in 13 injuries on the ground.
According to the Chaoyang District authorities, the collision took place at 5:55 pm. Footage from the scene captured emergency responders dousing fires near the 528-meter building, with debris scattered at its base. Reporters observed structural damage to the windows on one of the tower’s upper levels.
Law enforcement and medical personnel quickly secured the perimeter, restricting public access and photography. While investigators are looking into the cause of the crash, the incident remains unusual given China’s rigorous airspace regulations over the capital. The CITIC Tower, a massive 108-story office complex, typically houses thousands of workers.
