Burkina Faso ends diplomatic ties with France over security concerns

Burkina Faso has terminated diplomatic relations with France, accusing Paris of backing terrorist groups and pursuing neo-colonial interests in the Sahel region.

On Friday, Burkina Faso officially ended its diplomatic connection with France after a comprehensive review of their bilateral partnership. Communications Minister Gilbert Ouedraogo stated that the decision was taken to uphold national sovereignty and counter what the government describes as imperialist attempts to control the nation. The administration claims that the necessary environment for mutual respect and non-interference is no longer present.

The Burkinabè government alleges that France has actively supported subversive groups and terrorists operating within the country and the broader Sahel region. Furthermore, officials in Ouagadougou argue that Paris is promoting neo-colonial agendas to isolate Burkina Faso from the global community. Despite these political changes, the government noted that historical, social, and cultural bonds between the people of both nations remain intact.

Minister Ouedraogo urged the public to treat French residents and other expatriates with respect and to follow national laws. Moving forward, Burkina Faso intends to maintain an independent foreign policy, seeking balanced partnerships with all nations to foster security and development. The government remains available for diplomatic engagement provided there is mutual respect and recognition of sovereign equality.
