Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney anticipates that Craig Bellamy will remain as the men’s head coach following the failure of his potential move to Burnley. Discussions regarding a transition to the Championship side broke down on Thursday, ending the prospect of the 46-year-old leaving his current post.
Mooney stated on Friday that Bellamy remains fully dedicated to the Welsh squad, with immediate preparations shifting toward the upcoming Nations League campaign. Under Bellamy’s leadership, Wales secured promotion to Nations League A, where they are scheduled to face Portugal, Denmark, and Norway later this year. Despite the disappointment of missing out on a World Cup spot via a penalty shootout, the FAW leadership is confident in Bellamy’s direction for the team.
While former player Iwan Roberts expressed concerns that the Burnley negotiations might have strained Bellamy’s relationship with supporters, Mooney dismissed these worries. He emphasized that Bellamy, whose contract extends until Euro 2028, consistently discusses long-term strategy and improvements for the national team. Mooney reiterated that the FAW is satisfied with the high quality of football the team has displayed since Bellamy’s appointment and remains focused on their upcoming fixtures in September.
