Adamawa State has transitioned from being primarily a hub for drug consumption to a location where illicit substances are actively produced. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced on Friday that agents have successfully dismantled three separate cannabis plantations.
During an event in Yola commemorating the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, state commander Aliyu Abubakar confirmed the eradication of a 1.5-hectare cannabis farm in Mayo Belwa, along with one-hectare sites in both Mubi North and Mubi South local government areas.
Abubakar further detailed the agency’s performance since June 2025, noting the apprehension of 583 individuals and the successful prosecution of 270 suspects. Additionally, officers seized five tonnes of various narcotics, including methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine, and diazepam.
Both Commander Abubakar and guest speaker Dr. Stephen John highlighted the strong link between substance abuse and rising criminal activity. Dr. John emphasized that individuals rarely engage in violent crimes such as kidnapping or robbery without being under the influence of drugs. He urged the government to improve its counter-criminal strategies to address the sophisticated tactics currently employed by lawbreakers.
