TCN Re-energizes Benin–Egbin 330kV Power Line Following Grid Fault

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has successfully returned the Benin–Egbin 330kV line to service following a major power disturbance that impacted Lagos.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed on Thursday that the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line is back in operation. This follows a power system failure that triggered electricity blackouts throughout Lagos and nearby regions earlier that morning.

Ndidi Mbah, the TCN General Manager for Public Affairs, noted that the instability began at 8:19 a.m. when voltage issues impacted the Lagos transmission corridor. This surge forced several power plants to shut down and caused widespread outages. To prevent a total national collapse, the National Control Centre ordered power stations to lower output and stabilize the system frequency.

Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, met with TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to fast-track recovery efforts. While the Benin–Egbin line is now carrying electricity, specialized engineering teams from the Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are currently fixing the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line. The TCN has apologized for the inconvenience and maintains its focus on improving grid resilience to prevent future occurrences.
