King Charles has become the first British monarch in modern history to publicly share the details of his tax bill, reporting a payment of £12.9 million for the 2024-2025 financial period. This significant contribution places the King among the top 100 taxpayers in the United Kingdom. Alongside him, the Prince of Wales disclosed a tax payment of £7.76 million for the same duration, consisting of both income and capital gains taxes. According to royal officials, these voluntary disclosures were made by both men to enhance institutional transparency.
The annual accounts indicate that the King and Queen Camilla intend to maintain their residence at Clarence House rather than relocating to Buckingham Palace. This decision aims to improve public access to the palace, where renovations totaling nearly £370 million are expected to conclude in early 2026. This departure from tradition marks a significant shift in royal living arrangements not seen since the era of Queen Victoria.
Regarding royal funding, the Sovereign Grant is set to rise to just under £100 million for the 2027-28 fiscal year. The Treasury and royal trustees approved this increase to cover building maintenance, cybersecurity enhancements, and environmental upgrades, such as the installation of new boilers at Windsor Castle. James Chalmers, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, emphasized that these funds support the institution’s official duties rather than the private wealth of the royal family. Furthermore, Prince William has directed that income from the Dartmoor Prison site be redirected toward supporting local community initiatives in the Princetown area.
