The Lagos State Police Command has cleared up concerns regarding a potential terrorist event following an explosion on June 22, 2026, at 19 Way Street in Mushin. Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai stated that forensic evidence proves the event was a mechanical malfunction rather than a criminal or terrorist act.
Initial reports suggested a possible improvised explosive device (IED), prompting the deployment of the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear unit. This specialized team examined the damaged vehicle, analyzed debris, and interviewed witnesses. Their findings showed a complete absence of explosive residues, detonators, or typical blast patterns.
Investigators concluded that the incident stemmed from the sudden failure of a pressurized mechanical part near the vehicle. This release of energy shattered the passenger-side window and caused minor injuries to the driver. The police have officially categorized the event as a mechanical explosion, confirming there is no link to insurgency or sabotage.
Commissioner Fatai thanked the public for their quick alerts to authorities and commended the emergency responders for their efficiency. He emphasized that the force remains dedicated to transparency and urged citizens to keep reporting any suspicious activities to maintain safety.
