Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has inaugurated a Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to address the rising crisis of addiction within the region. This initiative reflects the state government’s intensified strategy to mitigate drug-related crimes and substance dependency.

Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, formerly the head of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, has been appointed to lead the 20-member committee. High-profile campaigner Abdussalam Zaura (AA Zaura) also joins the group. According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the body is tasked with identifying the origins of these issues and implementing practical remedies.

The task force will utilize a multi-agency approach to disrupt illegal supply chains and boost prosecution rates. Key objectives include enhancing intelligence collaboration between security branches, identifying drug distribution hubs, and facilitating coordinated raids. Furthermore, the administration plans to work with the judiciary to establish fast-track courts to expedite the processing of drug cases.

Beyond enforcement, the group is mandated to prioritize public awareness. By partnering with religious and community leaders, the committee aims to reach youth and students with preventive messaging and support services for those seeking rehabilitation. Governor Yusuf emphasized that curbing drug abuse is essential to securing the welfare of the younger generation, calling upon the task force members to operate with absolute dedication and integrity.
