One Omeixa Omega from Kogi State, has implored elders of his community to reconsider the inclusion of tubers of yam as part of traditional marriage rites.

Omeixa, who made the plea in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 1, 2024, said intending grooms are expected to present 75 tubers of yam, adding that it’s capable of deterring suitors.

“Dear Ebira Kinsmen and elders, I want to implore you all to kindly reconsider the inclusion of tubers of yam as part of traditional marriage rites. As I know, an intending groom is expected to present at least Seventy Five (75) tubers for what we all know as smalll/secrete marriage introduction and the big marriage introduction,” he wrote.

“Some persons ended up presenting One hundred tubers (100). A hundred tubers of yam as 2013 costed between N25,000.00 to N30,000.00. That same number of tubers now cost between N700,000.00 to N1,000,000.00. Except things change quickly, this is capable of deterring suitors who more often than not are people who are just starting. Please kindly reconsider this aspect. Sincerely, Concern indigene.”
