Suspected Herders Attack Benue Community Leaving One Dead and One Injured

A violent confrontation involving suspected herders in Benue State has resulted in the death of one man and the injury of his brother after a dispute over damaged crops.

Tse Orhungul settlement in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, is reeling following a violent assault by armed men suspected to be herders. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening after a disagreement involving cattle grazing on local farmland.

Local youths had impounded a cow caught destroying maize crops and brought it to a security station in Yogbo to demand compensation. While the youths were occupied with this, armed individuals infiltrated the village. They encountered two brothers, Verse and Terkimbir, working on their farm near the settlement. The assailants used machetes and swords to inflict severe wounds on both men.

Verse succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while his brother Terkimbir remains in stable condition following medical treatment. This incident follows a previous attack on the siblings’ sister earlier this March, adding to the growing sense of alarm regarding persistent violence in the area. Official comments from the Benue State police command are currently unavailable.
