NiDCOM Pledges Continued Advocacy for Nigerians Abroad Following Canadian Murder Conviction

NiDCOM reaffirms its commitment to protecting Nigerians globally after a Canadian court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the 2022 murders of two Nigerian nationals.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has underscored its dedication to safeguarding citizens residing internationally and seeking justice for those affected by criminal acts. This announcement followed the Ontario Court of Justice sentencing a perpetrator to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years for the murders of Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe.

The two men lost their lives during a shooting at a Vaughan nightclub on July 23, 2022. The court found the defendant guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of causing bodily harm. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the spokesperson for NiDCOM, stated that this ruling serves as a vital advancement in securing accountability for the victims’ families.

While NiDCOM praised the thorough work of Canadian law enforcement and the judiciary, they acknowledged that the legal victory cannot replace the lives lost. The Commission recognized the fortitude of the grieving families throughout the prolonged legal proceedings. Chibueze Momah, a 22-year-old computer programming graduate, and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, who was working in security at the time, were described by loved ones as diligent and forward-thinking individuals.

NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa previously offered condolences to both families following the tragedy. The Commission emphasized that it will persist in its mission to support and advocate for the rights of all Nigerians abroad.
