AAU Ekpoma Academic Staff Union Threatens Indefinite Strike Over Agreement Implementation

The ASUU chapter at Ambrose Alli University is threatening an indefinite strike, citing the government’s failure to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement and settle outstanding arrears.

The Ambrose Alli University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning regarding a potential strike. The union cites the Nigerian government’s failure to uphold the 2025 agreement as the primary motivation for this decision.

Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Dr. William, the chapter’s Chairman and Secretary, announced this development in Benin City. Following a congress held on June 24, 2026, the union began mobilizing members for an indefinite work stoppage. According to the leadership, their previous attempts to resolve these issues with university administration and the Edo State Government have been ignored.

The union demands that starting with July 2026, all salaries must include the CATA component and associated allowances as defined by the 2025 agreement. Furthermore, they insist on receiving all outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026. Failure to meet these demands will trigger a complete shutdown of academic activities.

While acknowledging the cooperative nature of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the union expressed frustration that other institutions, including several state-run universities, have already successfully implemented these terms. The leadership emphasized that while they value industrial peace, the full adoption of the agreement is the only way to avoid the looming strike.
