The Oko Opo Widows Foundation has formally requested that Nigerian federal and state authorities create a specialized agency. This unit would focus on mitigating the intense socio-economic difficulties experienced by widows and the children they support.
Ambassador Babatunde Adeyemo, who leads the foundation, made this appeal in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during events observing International Widows Day. He argued that a government-sponsored platform is essential to deliver organized, long-term relief to the millions of women forced to raise children alone after the death of their spouses.
Adeyemo suggested that the proposed body should prioritize economic independence, medical care, educational funding for children, and legal aid. He highlighted that many widows face persistent poverty and social exclusion. By implementing intentional policies, the government could restore their dignity and improve living standards. Furthermore, the foundation invited private companies and citizens to collaborate in establishing structures that safeguard these families.
