Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has officially inaugurated the CBN Naira Ambassadors Club. This initiative is designed to educate young Nigerians on the importance of respecting and maintaining the national currency.
Addressing students from secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Cardoso emphasized that the Naira is a vital symbol of national sovereignty and economic health. He reminded attendees that the banknotes represent the country’s identity and that mishandling them, through defacement or mutilation, imposes unnecessary financial strain on the government.
Ms. Emem Usoro, Deputy Governor for Operations, highlighted that the program aims to shift behaviors such as spraying money at events or folding bills, which significantly shorten the life of the currency. She noted that by instilling better values in the youth, the CBN hopes to foster a culture of respect for the Naira.
Dr. Adetona Adedeji, the Director of Currency Operations and Branch Management, confirmed that this project will expand across the country. He reiterated that protecting the currency is a collective responsibility that rests upon every citizen.
