Andy Burnham expected to reshuffle cabinet if he succeeds Sir Keir Starmer

Andy Burnham is preparing for a potential transition to prime minister, with plans to reshuffle the cabinet and address pressing economic and defense challenges.

Reports suggest that if Andy Burnham ascends to the role of prime minister, he is likely to remove Rachel Reeves from her position as chancellor, potentially offering her a secondary role within his administration. A representative for Burnham stated that no formal decisions have been finalized.

As the sole contender in the Labour leadership race, Burnham is currently forming his team for Downing Street. This transition follows Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation shortly after Burnham secured victory in the Makerfield by-election, marking his return to Parliament. The selection of a chancellor remains a primary focus for Burnham as he plans his potential cabinet.

While internal expectations suggest Reeves will depart her current post, she is anticipated to receive an offer for a lower-ranking cabinet seat. An associate of Burnham noted that he holds deep respect for Reeves and aims to retain her within his inner circle. James Purnell is slated to serve as Burnham’s chief of staff.

Defense spending presents an immediate budgetary hurdle for the incoming leader. Burnham has consulted with former defense secretary John Healey regarding the necessity of increasing military funding. Meanwhile, some Labour members, including Darren Jones and Al Carns, are weighing whether to challenge Burnham to ensure a competitive leadership process, though both remain hesitant. Securing a spot on the ballot requires significant backing from MPs and party affiliates.
