A study suggests that taking five-minute walking breaks every hour can improve employee mood, productivity, and health without disrupting the workday.

Office culture often demands that employees remain seated for long periods during meetings or while handling emails. Experts warn that constant sitting poses significant health risks, including a higher likelihood of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. While many recognize the value of taking breaks, the specific frequency required to balance productivity with health has remained a subject of debate.

A recent study from Columbia University, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggests that five-minute movement breaks every hour provide the ideal balance. Lead researcher Keith Diaz noted that while many adults are sedentary for most of the day, a short walk each hour is a practical way to enhance mood and combat exhaustion without sacrificing work performance. The study of 11,000 U.S. employees found that while more frequent movement was beneficial, an hourly break was the most sustainable method for maintaining alertness and output.

Despite concerns from some staff regarding how their superiors might perceive these breaks, Diaz emphasized that movement actually supports executive functions like memory and focus. Simple strategies such as holding walking meetings or pacing during phone calls can make this transition easier. Emily McGrath of the British Heart Foundation noted the positive implications of these findings for general health but advised that further long-term studies are necessary to confirm these benefits for heart health specifically.
