Aliyu Muhammad, the spouse of Ummulkhairi Muhammad who was tragically killed by a mob in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, has accused a local Divisional Police Officer of complicity in her death. According to Aliyu, his wife sought sanctuary at a police station after being accused of child abduction, but the officer allegedly removed her hijab and forced her back to the waiting crowd, where she was ultimately murdered.
In a discussion with BBC Hausa, Aliyu shared that their marriage of 14 years had produced four children. He recalled how their final morning together seemed normal as they departed for their daily tasks. Ummulkhairi had planned to attend a religious lecture before the confrontation occurred.
The incident, which gained national attention due to graphic footage of the assault, has prompted legal action. Kaduna State Police officials report that 24 suspects have been taken into custody. These individuals were brought before a Magistrate Court in Kaduna to face multiple charges, such as culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and causing public disorder.
